United States Women’s National Team's Abby Wambach scored the lone goal of the match to lift the US over Nigeria and advance to the round of 16 in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada Tuesday night at BC Place Stadium Vancouver, Canada.

United States finished first place in the ”group of death” following a 0-0 draw against Sweden and a 3-1 win against Australia.

Wambach scored her 14th World Cup goal late in the final period getting free on a corner kick connecting on a cross from teammate Megan Rapinoe.

“Scoring goals is not that easy. I’m not making any excuses,” Wambach, who had previously complained on games being played in artificial turf, said in a report.

The veteran striker is also concerned that she needs to finish the chances of scoring given to her as the team only managed to score one goal in the past two games.

The US team had most of the possessions in the match forcing Nigeria goalkeeper Precious Dede into making as many saves as she could to keep the match at point blank.

Nigeria only had one chance to score in the entire game when Asisat Oshoala nearly converted from Ngozi Okobi, but Julie Johnston of the US team deflected it.

Alex Morgan, who had worked her way back from a bone bruise in her left knee, made her first start in World Cup Canada.

Morgan looked sharp and had several opportunities to score including a near goal when she knock the ball over Dede.

An electrifying crowd of 52,000 fans were in attendance, mostly Americans who travelled north to Vancouver to support USWNT's bid for a third World Cup title.

“I think that [crowd] has a big part to do with our energy tonight,” said U.S. head coach Jill Ellis.

The US team, who holds two World Cup title, has not won a title since 1999.
