Fitness experts have said that walking is a super star when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. Researchers have said that a combination of physical activity and inactivity has a link to chronic disease risk.

An author and scientist, Katy Bowman, mentioned in her book, "Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement" that movement nutrients are as important as dietary nutrients. She said that walking was a biological imperative.

She is also a bio-mechanist based in California. She explained that walking was a superfood and that it was a defining movement of a human being which was easier than doing exercise, reported Fox News.

A research by the University of Texas School of Public in 2013 had 218 participants who were marathoners and half marathoners. They were asked to report their training and sitting times.

It was found that they had about 6.5 hours hours of average training time in a week while their average sitting time was around 8 to 10.75 hours in a day. This suggested that the runners had a combination of high activity as well as inactivity.

The creator of the "Walk at Home: Mix and Match Walk Blasters" DVD, Leslie Sansone, said that many people spent hours in the gym and they believed that that was the only way to be fit. While referring to the television weight-loss show, "Biggest Loser," she explained that the show's idea was everywhere because of which people think that if they weren't throwing up or crying, they were not heading towards fitness. She also added that to begin with, five kilometres per hour was a good start and then slowly one can increase the distance.

President of the American College of Sports Medicine, Dr Carol Ewing Garber, recommended a minimum of 7,500 steps to be taken each day. She also said that in a week, one should get involved with a minimum of 150 minutes of activity. She is also a professor of movement sciences at Columbia University in New York.

Many celebrities, too, believe that walking is a great way to stay fit. A few of them are Heidi Klum, Kelly Brook, Elle Macpherson and Ali Larter.
