The “Vikings” season 5 release date hasn’t been confirmed yet by History. The network, however, has assured fans that the show is indeed set to return this year. The cast members have also hinted on the series’ possible return, including Katheryn Winnick, who recently teased fans about some “big news coming soon.”

Spoiler alert: This article contains plot details about the fifth season of “Vikings.” An official announcement has yet to be made regarding the air date of the season premiere. Episodes from the series’ previous seasons are available for Australian viewers to watch on SBS.

Get excited, “Vikings” fans. The season 5 air date could be announced in the coming days. The queen herself hinted about the possible announcement on her Instagram post.

Katheryn Winnick, who plays Lagertha on the show, posted a photo over the weekend of what looks like a post-production snapshot (see the Instagram post below). The actress also added that the “Vikings” team is “just finishing up” the upcoming season’s episodes. But the most exciting thing that Winnick mentioned is that “big news” about the show is coming soon.

The upcoming season is the History series’ most anticipated one yet as it’s filled with a lot of questions, especially concerning Lagertha. Word has it that Winnick’s character may end up getting killed next season as a number of adversaries will be gunning for her. Harald (Peter Franzén) is expected to go after her. The sons of Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) and Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) are likewise going to hunt her down to avenge their mother’s death at the hands of the reigning queen of Denmark.

Fuelling the speculation fire is the series’ official Instagram account, which posted an image of Winnick with a large portion of her face seemingly beaten and covered in blood. According to the post, the queen was having a “rough day at the office” during that time. It also doesn’t bode well for Lagertha that she is currently listed to appear in only a handful of episodes next season.

Winnick’s IMDB page at the moment shows that she is scheduled to appear in only four episodes next season. In comparison, Alex Høgh Andersen, who plays Ivar the Boneless, is listed to appear in all 20 episodes. Jordan Patrick Smith and series newbie Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who play Ubbe and Bishop Heamund, respectively, are also scheduled to appear in every instalment of “Vikings” season 5.
