In a span of more than six years, “The Vampire Diaries” has seen seven seasons and saw the interesting journey of beloved characters such as the Salvatore brothers. It is still unclear when the series will end; however, “The Vampire Diaries” showrunner revealed that the show’s future is linked to its main actors Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder.

Somerhalder and Wesley portray the Salvatore brothers Damon and Stefan, respectively. Over the years, loyal fans of “The Vampire Diaries” has seen the various challenges, both in life and love, which the two characters experienced. When asked about the series’ potential end, showrunner and co-creator Julie Plec told E! News that her “destiny” with “The Vampire Diaries” is also connected to the two actors.

“I finally realised that my destiny on this show, creatively, is tied in to Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. And I mean that in a really good way. As long as those boys who I now consider my friends want to keep telling the story, then I won't walk away from telling the story,” she explained to E! News.

Plec went to state that should the story behind Somerhalder and Wesley’s characters come to a close, she would be working with the two actors to come up with the “best” ending possible. “There's always things that could go wrong in that scenario, there's always pressure that can be put on. But… the three of us I'd like to think will make the creative decision of when the show should be over,” she added.

In an interview with Variety, Plec also shared her thoughts about the show’s future. She explained that in her opinion, “The Vampire Diaries” series end is more closely linked to Somerhalder and Wesley “more so than the network and the studio.” She also stated that the decision to end the show would be a “collective” one. “Right now, they’re in the driver’s seat of that and we’ll see how much longer they feel like they want to be doing this,” Plec explained.

In other news, Somerhalder is also set to direct an episode in “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7. The actor recently took to Instagram to share the good news to his fans. He captioned an image of himself in a dimly lit plane, “On my way... Prepping Episode 716 of The Vampire Diaries as a director.”

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 will return on Jan. 29 in the US on CW.
