The US Virgin Islands has announced an offer for travellers this year. The island will give travellers US$300 (AU$411) for spending at least three consecutive nights on St Thomas, St John, or St Croix at a participating hotel.

The promo is in line with the celebration of the centenary of Denmark selling the islands to the United States in 1917. The event is dubbed as the "Transfer Day" and it’s celebrating its 100th anniversary on March 31.

Australians and interested guests from all over the world need to book trips before Oct. 1 to take advantage of the offer. They’ll need to book a room with hotels participating in the program such as The Buccaneer in St Croix and Caneel Bay in St John.

For Australians to cash in on the offer, they need to head to America’s east coast. Guests will be welcomed by a number of major carriers and can travel between the islands by ferry.

Tourists should note that the government isn't just handing cash once they arrive at the airport. Fox News has learned that guests will instead be given a voucher of US$300 (AU$411) toward their "Historical/Cultural Tours and Activities.” The voucher can be redeemed at the guests' hotel of choice.

Aside from enjoying its sunny beaches, tourists can also check out US Virgin Islands’ museums or head to Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the USVI territory located in St Thomas. They may also see the bioluminescent bays on St Croix at the Salt River Bay National Historical Park.

Meanwhile, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that health public officials have reported that mosquitoes in the US Virgin Islands are infected with Zika virus. Thus, the CDC recommends that those who wish to visit and explore the US Virgin Islands should keep themselves protected from mosquito bites.

Visitors are advised to cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Visit the CDC official site to know more tips on how to protect against mosquitoes in the US Virgin Islands.
