The Sony Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact are now available in the US with a price tag of US$600 (AU$846) and US$500 (AU$705) respectively, but unfortunately, the US version of the latest Xperia smartphones will not house a fingerprint scanner.

According to Android Police, a fingerprint reader was listed on the Z5 Compact spec sheet, while photos of the US editions also revealed that the power button looked similar to the international version, which houses a fingerprint sensor.

However, Sony has confirmed the removal of the sensor for the US variants of the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact, saying the move was "simply a business decision".

The release of Sony’s latest top-of-the line series of unlocked handsets in the US is still significant, with the phones available for purchase on Amazon, Best Buy and B&H among other participating retailers.

“Building a stable business in the U.S. market continues to be an important area of focus in helping Sony Mobile pursue profit by optimising business scale,” said Kunihiko Shiomi, president of Sony Mobile Communications North America in a press note posted on Sony Mobile Blog.

“We are excited about the introduction of Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact unlocked in the U.S., particularly as we see a growing trend in the unlocked market.”
