World No. 2 Roger Federer made quick work of Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer 6-1 6-2 6-2 in the first-round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Federer, who won the Cincinnati Masters title last month against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, said his 77-minute victory was a great boost of confidence heading into the next round of the tournament.

Federer started his US Open bid strong after dismantling Mayer in three straight sets. The Swiss Maestro recalled his ferocious battle with Mayer from the Shanghai Rolex Masters last year, which he considered one of the luckiest matches he ever won. However, the 34-year-old Federer appeared untroubled in the opening round against Mayer, who is currently at No. 22 in world rankings.

“I actually wasn't so confident yesterday and today. I just felt like maybe could be one of those matches I couldn't see it coming,” Federer told ATP World Tour’s official website.

Federer converted 65 percent of his first serves in an easy first-round win against Mayer and the Swiss international may have actually been serving better than ever. Federer has been landing 64 percent of his serves so far in 2015, matching his career bests in 2008 and 2011.

"It all starts with the serve, to be quite honest," Federer said, reports ESPN. "If you're able to hold your serve, I don't want to say you can do pretty much anything on the return, but chances are it's in your favor."

The 17-time Grand Slam champion also revealed he is playing with confidence and the sweep against Mayer got him off to a good start in the US Open. Federer, who has a 72-10 tournament record, is looking for his 18th major title and first since beating Andy Murray in the 2012 Wimbledon final.

Federer will face Belgian Steve Darcis in the last 64 round at Flushing Meadows. Darcis progressed to the second round after defeating Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-7 (2) 6-3 6-2 3-1.
