Shiri Appleby, star of “UnReal,” is going to guest star on “Code Black.” Appleby will appear in one episode of the upcoming CBS medical drama, which will premiere on Sept. 30.

Shiri will take on the role of Dr. Carla Niven, the former girlfriend of freshman resident Dr. Malaya Pineda (Melanie Chandra), according to an exclusive report by Variety. Niven will suddenly return to Pineda’s life after being admitted to the hospital as a patient.

Dr. Niven is described as an aggressive and dominant ER doctor working at a hospital in another area who trained at Code Black’s Angels Memorial. It was the place where Pineda’s relationship with Niven started when the former was still a medical student. Dr. Pineda is an ER doctor at Angels and will treat Dr. Niven. At the time of her admission, Niven will be pregnant and complaining of muscle pain, which will later be diagnosed as cancer.

“She has this ex who shows up and it seems simple, but it turns into something serious. Over the course of Malaya treating her and supporting her, this love story develops, but ultimately, it’s a bit of a tragic love story. She’s a terrific actress. It’s a wonderful story,” “Code Black” creator Michael Seitzman said in the same Variety report.

Appleby’s guest appearance will let her work again with executive producer Marti Noxon, creator and showrunner of “UnREAL.” It will not be the actress’s first medical drama, since she appeared in 10 episodes of “ER” before as Dr. Daria Wade/Ms. Murphy. There will also be other guest appearances on “Code Black” by Cress Williams and Gail O’Grady.

Appleby will become a series regular for the second season of “UnReal.” In the previous events of the TV drama, Rachel Goldberg (Appleby) and her boss Quinn (Constance Zimmer) became vengeful for being dropped by men. Fans can expect to see what becomes of Rachel and Adam’s (Freddie Stroma) relationship in the next season. Rachel will have to determine how far she is willing to go and how much damage she could inflict to succeed in Hollywood, Variety writes.

More news and updates on the development of “UnReal” Season 2 and “Code Black” are expected soon.
