Uber, the mobile ride hailing app company is hiring professionals to fill various job positions at its new Advanced Technologies Center in Pittsburgh. The research center that focuses on developing self driving car technology and advanced vehicle safety and mapping systems is seeking engineers in the field of robotics, communications, machine learning, traffic simulation, vehicle testing and software and hardware development.

It is yet to be confirmed if Uber is planning to introduce its own self driving car or is it aiming to develop the required technologies that will aid the automakers experimenting with their self driving car project.

As per one of the job requirements posted by Uber, the company seeks mechanical engineers with knowledge of modern automotive electronics and diagnostics, who can manage ‘multiple design challenges’, as per a report on CIO. Uber is also seeking software engineers who specialize in vehicle controls, computer vision and sensors domains, reports CIO.

Uber had advertised for 19 positions on Monday, most of which called for multiple workers. “With Uber's new center, the company is likely trying to create a lab environment where top engineers and researchers can play around with new technologies, and build up a strong knowledge base,” the CIO report quoted Joachim Taiber, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Clemson University, as saying.

One of the job posts also suggests that the mobile ride hailing app company is also looking for Motion Planning Engineers specializing in "production-quality software development or in robotics motion planning or controls algorithms.” Among the other job positions that Uber wants to fill is that of ‘Manufacturing engineers’ with experience in vendor interactions and supplier management and vehicle technicians who have experience in building cars at all levels.

Self Driving Cars is deemed the next big thing in the auto industry. Not only automakers but even some technology companies are also working on their own self driving car projects. Some of the biggest automotive and technology companies that have joined the race for self driving cars include Audi, Honda, Mercedes Benz, Renault Nissan, Hyundai, Volvo, Delphi, Tesla, MobileEye, NVIDIA and Google.
