The popularity of video games has increased dramatically over the years, with developers and gamers alike flocking social media platforms to lengthen their reaches. Recently, social media platform Twitter followed the footsteps of YouTube as it launched its own video gaming-dedicated account.

In a surprise move, Twitter recently launched a new video gaming-dedicated service called Twitter Gaming. The company even hired an executive to lead the new service, and Rodrigo Velloso was announced as Director of Gaming.

The goal of the new service is to provide support to the gaming community by allowing them to communicate with each other through Twitter easily. The service aims on delivering high-quality content so that gaming organisations and personalities alike can easily interact with each other and with gamers. The account first opened up on Jan. 8, and recently, it posted a tweet for the second time with the simple message, “Let’s Tweet,” accompanied by an animated GIF of the classic “Space Invaders.”

“There are thousands of gaming-related Tweets sent on Twitter each day,” Twitter said in a statement, reports PC Gamer. “Whether folks are discovering a new game, Tweeting at a gaming personality, keeping up with gaming news or following their favorite esport, we want want to make it easy for gaming fans to find and join the most vibrant conversations about games.”

The account is not very active as of now as it only retweets greetings from some of the top gaming developers. In some cases, the account has responded to tweets by some developers, including Bethesda. Gamers should expect more from the account in the following weeks.

Twitter Gaming joins the likes of other niche Twitter accounts. These include Twitter Music, Fashion, Government, Television, Small Businesses and Sports.
