With a huge offer from Manchester City, Wolfsburg has no choice but to let go of one of their key players in Kevin De Bruyne, who is reportedly being offered £54 million (AU $116.15 million).

“He has an astonishing, astonishing offer from City and we can’t compete with that. We had to take it seriously, that is the way we react with our players, and finally we decided to start negotiations with City.” Klaus Allofs, Wolfsburg’s general manager, said via The Guardian, about City’s offer for De Bruyne.

Allofs rued the possibility of losing one of their key players saying it is a “big blow” to the club for their upcoming campaign. Meanwhile, City’s Brian Marwood, the head of football administration, acknowledged that his team is looking to acquire De Bruyne but wouldn’t comment until the deal is official.

“Everybody is aware we are interested in this player,” Marwood said in the same article, “but until anything is done it’s not appropriate for us to make any comment.”

The 24-year-old De Bruyne, who is from Drongen, Belgium, played for 51 games for Wolfsburg last season and scored 16 goals. This year, he has one goal in the team’s first three matches. For his career, De Bruyne has 49 goals in 223 club appearances.

De Bruyne has also represented the Belgian soccer national team playing for the youth teams from 2008 to 2011 and the senior squad since 2010.
