It's that time of the year again to look back and assess the months that went by. To take part of such tradition, Twitter has released the most popular tweets sent from Australian accounts this year. Let's have a close look at the celebrated accounts that created waves across the micro-blogging site and kept the users amused.

One of the year's saddest moment is the sudden demise of cricketer Phillip Hughes. The news of this tragic incident trended at number one position in Australia. Other moments that caught the fancy of Twitter users are Tim Cahill’s reaction to Germany’s win over Brazil, Queen Elizabeth posing behind the Australian hockey players taking a selfie and the reaction on Ten’s reality show The Bachelor.

Australian accounts also attracted huge traffic this year. One of the celebrity accounts that saw heavy traffic was Lorde's. The 18-year-old singer from New Zealand has 2.68 million followers in her social media account. On March 31, she posted two pictures of herself on Twitter, one raw and another edited to make her skin look flawless. Her honest tweet was shared 73882 times and was a topic of discussion at several platforms, as told by News.com.

Lorde’s amusing tweet was closely followed by Cody Simpson and Australia's favorite Iggy Azalea, who posted a very cute mini-video of a child dancing to music with a lollipop in hand with the caption 'Me in the car when I hear my own song'. The rapper who has 3.43 million followers on Twitter simply loved her post and retweeted the same for 28539 times.

“@IGGYAZALEA: Me in the car when I hear my own song https://t.co/vlGrzUljbA” Hahaha OMG I love it!! That's happen to me a time or two

The next position is bagged by actor and writer Rebel Wilson, who has 2 million followers on Twitter. Her posted picture, which hinted at a sequel oh the hit flick “Pitch Perfect”, was shared on the site 24,000 times. Perched on the fifth slot is famous actor and producer Hugh Jackman. Jackman’s tweet praising the Australian band 5SOS was retweeted 23854 times by his 4.8 million followers.

On the whole, selfies, sports and celebrities dominated Twitter in 2014. Australians marking 11am for Remembrance Day on 11 November is also among the top tweets of the year.
