Robin Williams, who died by suicide in August, was the most searched topic in Google Canada for the year 2014. Death, it seemed, had no hold on the star of "Dead Poets Society," or at least as far as his followers are concerned.

Google Canada pulled its report from the search engine's 14th annual analysis of over two trillion searches performed around the world. The second most widely searched topic was the World Cup in Brazil. Third went to the iPhone 6, followed by the Winter Olympics, Ebola, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Hunger Games'' star Jennifer Lawrence, the late Joan Rivers, Jian Ghomeshi and the disease ALS, which went viral as the ice bucket challenge spread around the world.

Ghomeshi, who was fired as host of CBC's "Q" and charged with four counts of sexual assault, was actually the top trending Canadian for 2014. Next to him was Rob Ford, Toronto's former mayor, and Jim Flaherty, former federal finance minister, who died suddenly in April.

The World Cup in Brazil dominated Canada's top trending events in 2014. It was followed by the Winter Olympics in Sochi and the still-to-be-resolved disappearance of the Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.
