Google catches up with Apple's iOS 8 as it just recently announced details of its next major update, Android 5.0 Lollipop. The update promises revolutionary improvements including the Material Design and battery saving mode. Available on November 3rd through Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, the firmware aims to compete against Apple's recently released iOS 8 for mobile OS supremacy.

Android has more market share than Apple iOS but the latter has been more lucrative throughout the years. Can Google turn tables this time?

Google confirmed the name of the next big Android update as Android Lollipop 5.0. Many reports agree that the primary driving force of the software is its Material Design. The feature revamps the interface allowing a cleaner design and more fluid animations. Designers can now float items at varying heights allowing some components to be layered higher compared to others.

The depth is also different on the new upgrade. Some analysts believe that the UI can be a major step in addressing the fragmentation issues of Android. A unified UI platform design can revolutionize Android and level it to the more robust system of the Apple iOS. PC Pro reports that the new Android Lollipop configuration has been develop to function across multiple devices including tablets ant watches.

Know Your Mobile also notes that Lollipop offers a fresh multitasking menu and additional ways to take advantage of voice commands.

The next update also allows people to create multiple user accounts or log in through guest user mode. Google has tweaked the software to allow people to secure their devices via a range of Bluetooth connections. According to the announcement, the software will be released to Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and 10. The Nexus 4 has not been mentioned so far.

For those who cannot wait to try out the Android Lollipop update, XDA offers a preview of the official release. Users can download the installer from the XDA thread featuring fastboost tools and Android ADB. The download will be around 2MB. It offers a convenient and fast way to check out the tools without saving the complete Android SDK.
