The world has seen it countless of times. The fall of the teen idol is always tabloid fodder and standard conversation piece, whoever it is and whenever it occurs. Justin Bieber has taken a lot of heat the past few weeks, but if it's any comfort, history has shown other young stars who had to take plenty more. Take a look at some of the teen superstars who have risen and fallen-and in most cases, risen again-in spectacular fashion.

Britney Spears

One can't have a list about stars and their downfalls without including the one and only Britney Spears. The hottest artist in her generation, Spears began to spiral downwards by getting hitched to her childhood sweetheart for just over two days. Since then she has had divorce, married Kevin Federline, birthed two children, had another divorce, snapped without underwear, checked into rehab, shaved her head bald, gotten engaged, broke off engagement... the list goes on and on. Fortunately, it looks as if Spears is getting her act together in recent times as she takes care of her children and works on a new studio album.

Lindsay Lohan

The wide-eyed ten-year-old Lindsay Lohan in Parent Trap is hardly recognizable nowadays, although she still commands some space in tabloids. It seemed like she had everything: beauty, talent, charisma and endless opportunities. And then came the scandals: drug abuse, DUI (twice!), unprofessionalism, a much-publicized relationship with Samantha Ronson and many more. Perhaps the most shocking thing is realizing Lohan's trail of scandals hasn't stopped-she has a scheduled trial date for lying to the police. When will it end?

Macaulay Culkin

It's hard to believe now, but there was a time that Macaulay Culkin was the biggest, brightest young actor with the biggest, brightest future in the industry. Every household knew the Home Alone and Richie Rich star, and nobody could've guessed how it would turn out for the beloved actor. Culkin eventually retreated from the public eye and resurfaced only to be arrested for possession of marijuana and other substances. In mid-2012, the former child star's life was reported to be in danger from his battle with heroin. More recent pictures of Culkin show him looking healthier, but there has been no news of his well-being so far.

Mary-Kate Olsen

By all accounts, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are extremely close, successful and wealthy. None of it, not even her bond with her sister, was enough to rein in Mary-Kate's spiral down from the fame she's had since infancy. As the twins grew up in the unforgiving public eye, it became more apparent how frail and thin Mary-Kate was. In 2004, the perils of early success fell on her shoulders and the child star checked into a facility to treat her eating disorder. Fortunately, she recovered nicely. Mary-Kate is now heading a growing fashion empire with twin Ashley, and is currently in a loving, relationship .

Demi Lovato

Another teen star who succumbed to weight pressures is Demi Lovato, who's a well-known Disney star. She seemed to be on her way to join pals Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez at the top of the rising stars list, when disaster struck and Lovato was left suffering from an eating disorder, self-harming and bipolar disorder. It was tough for a teenager to deal with all that, but Lovato showed why she is a star and fought to get better. Now, the X-Factor judge is healthy and beautiful, looking like she's fulfilling her potential to the fullest.

Jodie Sweetin

She was television's ultimate sweetheart as Stephanie Tanner, but there was nothing sweet about the way her youth went after starring in the hit show Full House. Jodie Sweetin shared about her troubled teenage years in her book unSweetined, from getting drunk at the young age of 14 to ecstasy and cocaine throughout her high school and college years. Wilder stories exist such as snorting crystal meth at a premiere and driving drunk with her daughter in the car. Fear of losing custody of her daughter pushed Sweetin to get sober for good. In an interview with Us Magazine in 2009 she said, "But life is good. I'm happier than I can remember."

Amanda Bynes

Trouble comes to all kinds of young stars, as shown by Nickelodeon's Amanda Bynes. The budding comedienne used to charm audiences in television and movies alike, but now her headlines are cause for concern, not laughter. She retired, took it back, and had quite a few missteps such as DUIs and a hit-and-run accident. But the biggest change is her physical appearance, transforming from a fresh-faced girl to a heavily made up young woman who just recently posted a photo of her pierced cheek.

Haley Joel Osment

To some people, the wildly talented child star from The Sixth Sense and Pay it Forward may have seemed like a second coming of Macaulay Culkin. Unfortunately, he didn't quite end up as the award-winning actor the world envisioned and eventually suffered from the same streak of scandals as Culkin. He has been charged with DUI and possession of marijuana in separate occasions, and was sentenced to an alcohol rehabilitation and education program and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He has yet to revive his former glory onscreen, but should he choose to, a career in film is surely his for the taking.

Aaron Carter

Being the baby brother of a Backstreet Boys member may not seem like much claim to fame these days, but back in the 90s it was enough to catapult you into stardom. Aaron Carter found out the perks of being a Carter, earning his own following as a singer at a very young age. He charmed everyone from Hilary Duff to Lindsay Lohan, but that charm was not enough to get him through his arrest for possession of marijuana a few years later. After Michael Jackson's death, Carter also admitted that the king of pop gave him wine and cocaine when he was a teenager. His drug use eventually resulted in a stint in rehab, and he is now (presumably) doing well.

Drew Barrymore

It's hard to believe looking at her now happily married with a beautiful baby, but Drew Barrymore has went through pretty rough years as a child. Hailed as a breakout star at a young age, the actress has been using various substances even before she hit her teenage years including cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana and cocaine. Her constant drug use landed her in rehab several times, eventually achieving sobriety-and keeping it. Nowadays, she is a healthy wife and mother with a stable career in Hollywood with amazing box office earnings. Drew is the poster child for child stars gone bad, but she's also one for fallen stars who have risen again.
