Russell Brand has unwittingly started a new hashtag trend after he was called a hypocrite by The Sun. Twitter users have mocked the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid for its questionable logic on its front page with #TheSunLogic hashtag.

Earlier this week, Brand, who has been actively campaigning for political reforms, has lost his temper on a “snide” reporter who kept asking how much he pays for rent to his London home while he joined hundreds of New Era Estate tenants who marched on Downing Street because they have been threatened with eviction. Following the release of Brand and the Channel 4 reporter’s terse exchange online, The Sun newspaper has chimed in, calling the 39-year-old actor “hypocrite.”

According to the tabloid, Brand is a hypocrite for paying his rent. Apparently, he “rants against high rents and tax avoidance” when he pays 76,000 pounds a year to landlords who dodge taxes. Basically, The Sun was blaming Brand for possible illegal dealings that his landlord makes, which doesn’t make real sense at all, according to social media.

The hashtag #TheSunLogic has trended after the paper’s publication, with Twitter users mocking the absurd reasoning of The Sun. The hashtag is believed to have been started by journalist Owen Jones, whose sarcastic tweet about combating starvation was retweeted over a thousand times. From then on, a number of people have also joined in on the trend, giving their own absurd examples of what they believe was The Sun logic.

Stop talking about combatting starvation - you have a fridge full of food! Hypocrite! #TheSunLogic

Brand himself has joined in on the trend that he has arguably started. He first said he will be suing The Sun and Murdoch, whose News Corp owns the publisher of the tabloid. He also released a clip of himself questioning who the real hypocrites are, giving examples of wealthy business owners who dodge taxes.

He expended most of his energy criticising Murdoch, who he said managed to dodge paying taxes through loopholes for years.
