Two pedestrians were injured when a driverless freight train came off the tracks on Friday morning in Tasmania. The TasRail train was being loaded with cement when it departed without command from the remote driver around 9 a.m.

According to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, the operator immediately alerted authorities and tried to direct the runaway train into a dead-end yard in Devonport. Emergency services rushed to Devonport Wharf as soon as they learnt about the runaway train, warning everyone that it was about to derail.

The train the derailed a few minutes later upon arriving at the stops in the yard. The train hit a fence on Formby Road, sending debris flying, which hit two pedestrians.

Tasmania Police told 9news.com.au that a woman sustained cuts and abrasions to her head after debris from the train struck her, while a man in his 40s suffered cuts and abrasions, as well as a suspected broken elbow. They were taken to North West Regional Hospital but were released by early afternoon.

TasRail said it has launched a detailed investigation into the incident and has been cooperating with Tasmania Police and relevant authorities. ATSB is also investigating the incident.

“ATSB’s safety investigation will include an examination of the locomotive and wagons, interview witnesses, and obtain any available recorded data for analysis, amongst other activities,” it said in a statement.

“The evidence collection phase will define the size and scope of the investigation and determine the expected time frame for the completion of a final report.
