The Balvenie could up the ante for your next date night with the launch of its one-of-a-kind telescope perched above Sydney’s harbour at the top of the Shangri-La Hotel’s Blu Bar.

Handmade by Moonraker Telescope’s Mark Turner, and master wood craftsman Paul Cruickshank-Inns, the telescope was commissioned by the Single Malt Whisky label, owned by William Grant & Sons, as a way of celebrating its commitment as the only distillery in the Scottish Highlands that still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional floor malting, and has coopers who tend the casks and a coppersmith to tend the stills.

But what’s a telescope got to do with whisky, or drinking?

The design of the Balvenie telescope, including its handmade oak tripod and custom-made oak wood case, is inspired by The Balvenie’s distillery in Dufftown, Scotland. Its copper exterior is reminiscent of the distillery’s tills.

If that’s not enough to make you want to make the trip to Blu Bar on the 36th floor of the Shangri-La, this might be your kicker: the exhibition of the Balvenie telescope runs alongside the launch of Blu Bar’s new handcrafted whisky ‘Liquid Physics’ cocktail range.

“The five rare crafts of The Balvenie range truly epitomise hand craftsmanship. We wanted to create an experience to amplify this and have searched across the world to bring together some of the finest examples of modern day craftspeople plying their trades the old-fashioned way,” Mark Little, Marketing Manager of The Balvenie, said.

“Each of the different aspects of this event celebrates craftsmanship: Balvenie Whisky, The Moonraker Telescope and hand crafted whisky cocktails. ”

The telescope will be on show until April 10, 2016 at Blu Bar before it moves on to bars and restaurants in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane, where it will be featured for 6-8 weeks per location.
