“Supernatural” is bringing the girls back for another episode on Wednesday in the US. The season 11, episode 12 of the popular horror series will see beloved characters Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton) and Alex (Katherine Ramdine) joining Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) for a hunt.

Mild spoilers for the next episode of ‘Supernatural’ titled ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’

For a show with a strong female fanbase, “Supernatural” is ironically male-centric. Its two leads, Sam and Dean, and its two supporting characters, the angel Castiel and the demon Crowley (Misha Collins and Mark A. Sheppard respectively), are all men, as well as most of the recurring characters. Only a few women made it in the show and got approvals to stay beyond one episode from fans. Some of these women are coming back in the next episode.

According to Spoiler TV, Sam and Dean will visit Jody Mills, who has unofficially become an adoptive mother to Claire (Castiel’s vessel’s daughter) and Alex, whom Mills and the Winchesters saved from a family of vampires in the season 9 episode “Alex Annie Alexis Ann.” The boys rush to Jody after receiving a panicked phone call from Claire, who believes the recent murders in town are works of supernatural beings.

Jody, meanwhile, tells Sam and Dean that Claire has been getting into trouble lately for attacking and accusing regular people of being monsters.

Wayward Daughters

With the return of the strong women on the show, the idea of getting a spin-off show for them has once again been raised. According to the Mary Sue site, there has been an increased clamour for “Wayward Daughters,” a proposed show by fans who want a sequel show that stars female character favourites. The petition is up online and is even supported by Rhodes and Brianna Buckmaster, who plays another show favourite, Sheriff Donna Hanscum.

Both Rhodes and Buckmaster actively write Wayward Daughters fan fiction on Twitter.

Why Charlie had to die

The lack of women in the show has been a recurrent issue for fans of the show. During a “Supernatural” comic con in 2015, one fan put executive producer Jeremy Carver on the spot with the question, “Considering that women have often been used to further the plot of male characters, why was the decision made to kill Charlie and dump her in a bathtub?”

Charlie has been a fan favourite and was played by Felicia Day until the character was killed in season 10. The fan’s question had the male casts chuckling, prompting them to turn back their chairs from the audience and leave Carver to answer the question alone.

“I don’t have a great answer beyond we have favourite characters throughout the years who come on the show and, if we are doing our job right, people fall in love with the characters. And on the show where pretty much everybody dies at one point or another, it’s one of those horrible, sad yet dramatic things that we do on the show,” Carver said.

“Supernatural” will air on Feb. 8, Monday, in Australia on Eleven.
