“Supernatural” might end after the 300th episode. Stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who play brothers Sam and Dean Winchester respectively, have revealed their goal of at least making it to the 300th episode.

The long-running US show already has 241 episodes completed and is about to air its 12th season in October. Padalecki and Ackles still feel the “magic” of starring in the show, but they know it wouldn’t always be there. They only hope that they reach another milestone before the show ends.

“If we don’t make it to 300, I think Ackles and I will both be truly bummed,” Padalecki, 34, told Entertainment Weekly. “When we get to 300, I think Ackles and I will think it might be time to say bye. There’s a chance that changes, but we certainly do not take it for granted that we’re going to make it to 300.”

Ackles added that they would only leave the show if they don’t care about it anymore. “To this day, I have not really ever sensed that from myself or him,” he said.

“They’re paying us to bring that little bit of magic to what they wrote, and I still feel that magic today. The day that I don’t feel that magic will be a very sad day, and I hope that day never comes. I’d like to get to 300 before that day comes.”

The 300th episode of the show would be the 13th episode of season 14, if season 12 and 13 each has 23 episodes. Executive Bob Singer said they could end the show halfway through the season to mark the 300th as the finale.

“We talked about wanting to be able to know when our end was, and if it was to be, let’s say, 300 episodes, we could tell a 13-episode story,” he said. “I think it would be bad for this show to just ride off in the sunset without a finale. I think we’ve earned that. I don’t know what the finale is, but we’d certainly like to do one.”

“Supernatural” celebrated its 200th episode with a tribute to fans in season 10. The episode, “Fan Fiction,” revolved around a high school musical play based on the “Supernatural” stories written by Chuck Shurley (Rob Benedict). The 100th episode, season 5 “Point of No Return,” on the other hand, was an ordinary affair.

The actors have previously discussed how they wanted the show to end. Padalecki told EW earlier this year that he wanted Sam and Dean to “go out in a blaze of glory.” Ackles, meanwhile, thought the ending would stay true to its main theme: brotherly love. Dean, he said, would probably make the ultimate sacrifice for Sam in the end.
