“Super Smash Bros” players know that Nintendo’s top-selling fan-favourite game has been supported by additional characters in the form of DLCs. Now, the era of DLCs or “Super Smash Bros is nearing its end, as confirmed by the game creator.

In an interview with Source Gaming, creator Masahiro Sakurai explicitly stated that the DLC for “Super Smash Bros is coming to an end. That is not the only thing that’s been mentioned, as there is now the possibility that “Super Smash Bros” as a game may not even continue following the latest iteration.

Sakurai pointed out once again that they are not sure if there will be another Smash game. While the interviewer called out that the end of the franchise has been mentioned even before, so it is just as possible that the game will continue. To this, Sakurai made no confirmations. He did, however, insinuate that the future of the franchise may depend on his participation in the overall creation.

“If I keep making ‘Smash,’ I get to work on interesting things like Ryu, but if I leave, I don’t know if the staff could do it by themselves,” said Sakurai in a translation from Source Gaming.

This statement appears to hint at Sakurai’s plans—or lack thereof—when it comes to creating an original game outside of the “Super Smash Bros” title. As far “Super Smash Bros” is concerned, however, Sakurai also revealed a criteria by which they include characters in the game. According to the game creator, the popularity of the character and their uniqueness as an additional playable figure are the main factors that go into the decision.

Still, for this year, “Super Smash Bros” have the December Nintendo Direct to look forward to. More information are expected for Cloud Strife, the latest addition to the franchise.

iDigital Times reported that there are still two more slots seen in the files of “Super Smash Bros.” One could be reserved for Cloud Strife, but considering the results of the Smash Fighter Ballot held earlier this year. In any case, the last Nintendo Direct for the year is slated to be broadcast on Dec. 15, 2 p.m. Pacific Time. Sakurai will be the main speaker for this broadcast.
