The Carolina Panthers could bag their first ever Vince Lombardi trophy when they face the Denver Broncos at the Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco.

The Panthers are just one victory away from completing their dream season in the NFL. After finishing the season with a 17-1 record en route to a Super Bowl appearance at Levi’s Stadium, the Cam Newton-led team has no doubt shed their label as the underdogs against the Broncos and has never been in short of any motivation in playing at the Super Bowl.

“You don’t need any extra motivation,” Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis said, reports the Charlotte Observer. “You’re trying to be the last team standing. That’s the chip.”

The Panthers boast a dynamic offense led by none other than Newton, the team’s quarterback phenom. But the Broncos should not be taken lightly, considering how they squeezed themselves past the defending champs New England Patriots at the AFC Championship. It will be the Broncos’ second Super Bowl appearance in three years, and their experience in playing at the grand stage of them all will surely serve them well against the Panthers.

The Panthers have never gotten this close at winning the most important game of the NFL since the Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2003, when Tom Brady and the Patriots held them for a 32-29 win in Houston. Against Denver, who arguably has the best defense in the game, the Panthers can certainly hope it would not be déjà vu.

Meanwhile, Broncos veteran quarterback Peyton Manning, who many believe is playing the final game of his 18-year career, is expected to once again spearhead the Denver’s league-leading defense against the Panthers. The former Super Bowl MVP brushed off retirement chatters and insisted his focus remains in the team’s goal to win the championship.

“I haven’t made up my mind,” Manning said, reports The Washington Post. “But I don’t see myself knowing that until after the season. … I kind of stay in the moment and focus on the task at hand and just deal with this week.”
