A 17-year-old student was killed in a shooting incident outside his school in Boston, Massachusetts, in the US on Wednesday afternoon. Three others were injured by the gunfire but are expected to survive. The identity of the shooter is still unknown.

The victim, who has yet to be named by the police, came out of Jeremiah E Burke High School and was walking on Washington Street about 1:15 p.m. when he was shot. Before the multiple gunfire were heard, a fire alarm went off inside the school, prompting students to exit the school.

Two other young men and a 67-year-old woman were also wounded. They are expected to survive, according to Boston.com. It is unclear if the student was specifically targeted or was an unexpected casualty. The police also don’t know yet if the incident was connected to the fire alarm.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said the incident should provoke the anger of the public.

“When a 17-year-old dies on the street outside of school, we should all be outraged,” Evans said at the press conference. “And shame on anybody who doesn’t step up to the plate and help us solve this.”

Mayor Martin J Walsh agreed, saying, “One homicide is too many.”

The boy is the 13th homicide victim in Boston for this year alone.

He has not been identified yet, though his friends said he was a junior at the school.

“He’s a nice kid. He gets good grades. Everyone he hangs out with gets good grades. So I’m not understanding,” Victoria Johnson told local news WCVB. “I don’t know. I don’t know what he was doing outside of school, but in school he was focused.”

Police are still searching for the shooter. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the authorities immediately.
