Armed robber Stephen Jamieson was put behind bars once again after his successful escape from the Goulburn Correctional Centre, known for its tight security, on Tuesday afternoon. He was recaptured on the same day by the jail on the Hume Highway.

Jamieson tied two bed sheets together and knotted it to a metal that he cut through around a padlocked gate in order to climb and cross the fence of the prison. “He was able to get out of that exercise yard and then he had a range of bed sheets that he tied together and was able to swing them over the wall to then effect his escape by scaling that wall,” Peter Severin, the Corrective Services commissioner, said on Tuesday.

The police officials said that they tried to stop Jamieson, who was on allegedly stolen by him to flee the scene. However, he was arrested at a short distance.

He added that the convict was taken to the police station and was charged with escape lawful custody, unregistered/uninsured, unlicensed driver, illegal use of a vehicle and police pursuit.

The police said that Jamieson has been denied the bail and will be presented in the Goulburn local court on Wednesday.

This is not the first time when the prisoner tried to escape. Two weeks ago, he was found digging a tunnel to escape from the prison having maximum security. The armed robber had been serving for 12 years and was supposed to release from prison in 2021, but his attempt to escape has put him to segregation by the jail personnel.

It was in 2005, when Jamieson was arrested for four armed robbery charges but ran away from a Compulsory Drug Treatment Centre in 2009.
