“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams has revealed more details about the main villain Kylo Ren in an exclusive interview with Empire Online. He also talked about the origin of the First Order Stormtroopers and how Snoke, portrayed by Andy Serkis, plays into Kylo’s story.

For some time, fans believed that Kylo is a Sith because of how he’s revealed in the film trailers as someone who has force-like powers. He is even dressed as one with his long dark robe and mask. However, Abrams told Empire Online that he is “not a Sith,” thus he is not given the title befitting one like Darth Vader or Darth Plagueis. This is reportedly also why his much talked-about lightsaber is designed differently from the other Sith’s weapon. Ren’s lightsaber is ragged and consists of a hilt which is not found in other lightsabers.

Abrams adds that Ren “works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.” No details were further revealed about Serkis’ character, but according to Comic Book Movie, it’s likely that Snoke could actually be a Sith Lord in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” It’s been rumoured that he may even be Darth Plagueis.

Kylo and Snoke will be working together to achieve their evil plans against the Rebellion and will be controlling the First Order Stormtroopers to do their bidding. When asked to elaborate on the history of the group, Abrams teases that the First Order in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was somehow formed to please Darth Vader.

Abrams says the First Order was created out of the need to make sure that the Empire continues its work. Comic Book Movie claims the villain group sounds like they’re not remnants of a fallen Empire but a new fanatical group of Stormtroopers who look to Darth Vader as some dark saint.

“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again? What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire?” Abrams told Empire Online when asked about the origin of the First Order Stormtroopers in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
