When the first trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” rolled in fans thought casts and crew had shot some scenes in Abu Dhabi to represent the planet of Tatooine. However, movie director J.J. Abrams had confirmed that the sand planet is not Tatooine but the planet Jakku. By then all fans knew was that Jakku is a new planet in the Star Wars universe. But a report has released more details about the said planet.

Jason Ward from Making Star Wars gained some insights about the planet from the recent “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. Ward revealed that Planet Jakku actually belongs to the new Star Wars canon and that the planet was discovered following the events of “Return of the Jedi.”

Despite it being a “worthless world,” Jakku reportedly has a “strategic value” for Moff Tarkin who wanted to gain leadership over the Empire. By this time, a year after “Return of the Jedi,” Carlist Rieekan is known as the new leader of the New Republic.

Jason Ward mentioned a battle happening in Jakku but did not reveal more details. This Battle of Jakku reportedly takes place in the stars, in the sky and on land. It’s believed to be the largest galactic battle since the Battle of Endor. A Star Destroyer called the Inflictor is among the casualties of the battle as it crash landed over the planet.

"One month after the Battle of Jakku there were no longer any large-scale battles by the Empire and they vanished into a nebula," Jason Ward added.

A spatial look at Planet Jakku can be viewed at Star Wars.com . The “Star Wars: The Fore Awakens” dedicated site provided an interactive look at the new planet through a little bit of mouse play.

Positioning the mouse at the top right corner of the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” gallery page and then dragging it around until the starfield rotates will bring up a small planet which has been identified as Jakku. Starwars7news provided a clearer view of the planet through this zoomed out photo . The planet was reportedly added on Star Wars.com page in April, during the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim.
