So far the only possible image that links Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is from the film’s teaser, where it shows an alien-looking hand holding out a lightsaber. However, according to a report another concept art also shows a resemblance to the character.

Jason Ward from Making Star Wars has shared a photo of what he thought represents Lupita Nyong’o’s alien character in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Ward compared Maz Kanata’s teaser from the trailer to the concept art and said, “Upon looking at Maz in the teaser, I can see some slight design connections and think it is worth considering that the creature in the design above may be Maz.”

Ward noticed the check mark on the photo, which he said could only signify that the alien design or look was approved and even probably produced for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” “So far the pieces with checkmarks are the pieces I’ve seen in official photos for other aliens and such,” he added.

Back in May, Jay Carlson from Indie Revolver also shared another concept art for Maz Kanata. It’s hard to determine the similarities between the two alien designs, since Carlson’s photo shows Maz’s whole face while Ward’s image has the alien looking to the side.

A few insights were provided about Lupita Nyong’o’s role in Vanity Fair’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” feature. In the June issue, Maz Kanata is described as a pirate who owns a castle where a mix of galactic travellers and other smugglers occupy. There’s still no telling about the character’s allegiance, whether Maz Kanata is with the Resistance or the First Order (the new Empire). However, the publication teased that perhaps Maz is among the Rebel fighters. “Smugglers like Han Solo and Lando Calrissian were heroes of the original trilogy and the rebellion has a long and loving relationship with so-called scum,” it stated.

Lupita Nyong’o brought life to her alien character in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” through motion-capture. In the behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot released by Vanity Fair, the actress is seen donning motion-capture equipment to portray the CG character.
