A flashback sequence of Maz Kanata may be featured in “Star Wars: Episode 8.” J.J. Abrams shared some details about a scene that was supposed to be featured in “The Force Awakens,” but was later cut. The scene will reveal how the character came into possession of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber.

[Spoiler alert]

In Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) vision in “The Force Awakens” there were scenes that teased her back story. In a video posted on YouTube, Mike Zeroh reveals that the commentary of Abrams in the Collector’s Edition reveals that this scene was also supposed to show how Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) got Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) blue lightsaber.

The scene that was cut showed a peasant dropping the lightsaber, igniting it and starting a fire. He panics and runs away, only to return to get the Jedi weapon. The next shot is of a local trader taking it and selling it to a prosperous man.

There is battle between The Clan and Knights of Ren, in which the lightsaber is used. While the fight nears the end and the remaining people of the Clan are being killed, Maz quietly takes the lightsaber from the battlefield.

So, an extended version of Rey’s vision of the rainy night may be featured in “Star Wars: Episode 8.” Mike points out that there is the distinct sound of Luke’s lightsaber lighting up just before the Clan Leader is killed by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

While there is a big possibility that the cut scene may be featured in the upcoming movie, there is also the possibility of the scene being shot differently. Either way, the fans can expect to see Maz Kanata’s back story about how she acquired Luke’s lightsaber.

Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber will be important in “Star Wars: Episode 8” for two reasons. First, it will be used by Rey in her Jedi training, and second - Kylo Ren is keen to get his hands on the weapon.
