The beta for “Star Wars Battlefront” recently came to a close after it was extended until Oct. 13, and fans were able to take a peek of the game ahead of it Nov. 27 release. So far, the game looks to be a good title and has shut down the claim that it is just a “Battlefield” reskin, but the game seems to come up short in surpassing the quality of its predecessor.

All-out War Across Three Planets and Three Game Modes

The beta itself was done excellently, as it provided players with an overview of the full game. The beta came with three different game modes: Walker Assault on Hoth, Drop Zone on Sullust and Survival Mission on Tattoine.

Out of the three modes, two provide a competitive experience while one is geared toward working together with another player. Both Walker Assault and Drop Zone provide a good multiplayer experience for players aching for a true first-person action.

Walker Assault pits the Empire against the Rebel Alliance as the former tries to overtake the Rebel base using massive AT-ATs. Story-wise, the battle does happen in the films, but when put in motion in the game, those assigned to the Rebel Alliance are easily overpowered by the AT-ATs. Even Luke Skywalker proved to be no match against the massive vehicles.

DICE’s own take on the classic King of the Hill is Drop Zone. The game mode is good in the sense that it does push players to devise plans to win the battle. Compared with Walker Assault, Drop Zone gives the two opposing teams a more fair battle, one which does not include the AT-ATs on one side.

Survival Mission on Tattoine, meanwhile, was the only single-player mode available in the beta. It takes up the all-too familiar formula of a player or two taking a stand against waves upon waves of AI-controlled enemies in a set amount of time.

In the full game, players will be able to customise the loadout and the appearance of their characters. However, the extent of the customisation is still unclear.

Visually, the character and stage designs are good even if the game runs on a questionable resolution for consoles. DICE did not fail in simulating the planets seen in the movies.

A Game for Players, Not Fans

Compared with “Star Wars Battlefront II,” the new title features less of the content seen in the film franchise. In fact, the new title seems to focus on the original trilogy only.

In the beta, only two heroes were available: Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. DICE hasn’t announced any other hero slated to make an appearance.

Meanwhile, the previous title, “Star Wars Battlefront II,” featured a slew of heroes from all of the movies in the franchise. Players were even treated to a heroes-only mode in the game. The available hero units ranged from Jedis, Siths and even Force-deprived characters such as Chewbacca, Jango Fett and Han Solo.

“Star Wars Battlefront” also took up the loadout mechanic. Players were given the ability to create their own units, which is the norm in today’s shooters, but fans were aching for the preset units made available in the previous title. “Star Wars Battlefront II” gave players access to a wide array of units from Storm Troopers, Droids and even Gungans. What’s even better is that each unit's playstyle varies.

Another notable difference between the two titles is the number of areas in the game. “Star Wars Battlefront II” features a total of 33 maps spanning 16 different planets, while the new game will have a mediocre eight maps from four planets.

Fans of the franchise might also be turned off by the amount of content in “Star Wars Battlefront.” However, those looking for a good first-person shooter could find the game appealing.

The full version of “Star Wars Battlefront" will launch on Nov. 27 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. There are a lot of significant differences between the beta and the full game. Hopefully, DICE adheres to the feedback by fans after the open beta test.
