Filmmaker Justin Lin has earned himself the director's cap for "Star Trek 3." Lin who revived the "Fast & Furious" franchise will reportedly be taking the reigns of the sci-fi film, after both J.J. Abrams and Roberto Orci bailed out from the project. Abrams has lent his directorial vision to first two "Star Trek" films, but he decided to part ways from the franchise in order to direct "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Though Lin is yet to comment on clinching the prestigious opportunity, Drew McWeeny of Hit Fix thinks that Lin is a perfect choice to direct the film. "He's one of the guys who has been through this process enough times, with enough pressure on him, that the studio knows he's going to be able to get the film made on the schedule and the budget they want," said McWeeny in his report.

Moreover, Lin also has enough experience in directing an ensemble cast. In "Fast & Furious" franchise not only has he handled a group of actors, but has skilfully incorporated props (cars) and colossal sets, which is mandatory for such kind of films, as reported by the website. Just like "Fast & Furious," franchise "Star Trek 3" will feature a bevy of heavy-duty props such as star ships and Lin will reportedly do justice to the film. Apart from directing "Fast & Furious" films, Lin has an indie feature "Better Luck Tomorrow," to his credit. He has also directed the naval drama "Annapolis" and has been roped in to direct he first two episode of "True Detective" season two.

Meanwhile, the plot details of "Star Trek 3" yet to be revealed; however, it has been reported that the film will take departure from earth-centric theme and will be set in deep space, according to Coming Soon. The film may hit the theatres on 2016, though the confirmed release date has not been annouced. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana and John Cho are all expected to reprise their roles. The film will be shot in Vancouver, British Columbia and Canada.
