A new patent has been filed by Apple Electric Car, Inc. While this could be a coincidence with a matching brand name, there is no saying whether it is indeed Apple making an electric car or some other company.

The blog Patently Apple spotted the entry first and reports that no clues emerged from a Google search or a trademark search to identify the company. The patent is related to a computer system for an electric golf cart. This is not proof that Apple is making an electric car, but speculation is rife that the Cupertino-based company is eying the electric car market.

A report from the Financial Post in 2014 stated that Apple is looking at cars and medical devices for future growth. The report went on to say that Apple’s head of mergers and acquisitions, Adrian Perica, met with the founder of Tesla Motors Elon Musk at the company’s headquarters. After that, a Bloomberg TV report confirmed that while Musk did in fact go for a discussion to Apple, it was not acquisitions that were under discussion.

Now we know that the medical devices mentioned in the rumour was related to Apple adding medical apps to its app store. This was part of the new HealthKit introduced in June 2014. Nothing of significance has surfaced related to the Apple and Tesla talks. However, Business Insider has reported that the upcoming Apple Watch will have an app that will let the user control their Tesla electric car.

The new patent is for an adjustable mount for a computerised display in a golf cart. It is, in fact, unlikely that this patent has anything to do with Apple. On the other hand, Apple could be mulling buying over an electric car company to get into the race for electric cars.
