Grammy-winning vocalist Sam Smith has confirmed Tuesday that he will perform the theme song of the next James Bond film, “Spectre.”

Smith took to Instagram to announce that he will be singing “Spectre” theme song, “Writing’s On The Wall.” He uploaded a photo of himself standing in front of a spotlight, featuring the text, “Sam Smith Writing’s On The Wall Spectre.” In the caption, the British singer said, “This is one of the highlights of my career.”

“I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song,” Smith wrote. “ I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations.”

Smith has become the first British male solo artist to record a James Bond’s theme song in 50 years. Smith has co-written “Writing’s On The Wall” with Jimmy Napes. He and Napes have previously worked together on his hit singles “Stay With Me” and “La La La.”

“Sam and Jimmy Napes have written the most inspirational song for ‘Spectre’ and with Sam’s extraordinary vocal performance, ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time,” producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were quoted as saying in a statement by Variety.

The 23-year-old singer recorded the track in January, but he did not let anyone catch a whiff of it till this week. “I’m so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been a top secret mission of my own,” BBC quoted Smith as saying on Tuesday.

Before announcing the big news, Smith uploaded a photo of his hand on his Instagram and Twitter accounts, without a caption. It is the ring on his middle finger that hinted at his involvement in "Spectre," as a small octopus logo is engraved on it. Entertainment Weekly reported that members of the nefarious criminal organisation SPECTRE wear the same ring.

According to Smith, fans can pre-order “Writing’s On The Wall” on CD or vinyl via the link on his profile, or on iTunes. The track is set to release on Sept. 25.

“Spectre,” starring Daniel Craig, premieres in the U.K. on Oct. 26, and it opens in the U.S. on Nov. 6.
