A "space ball" measuring 35 centimeters (14 inches) in diameter and weighing six kilograms (13 pounds) has been discovered mid-November in a remote grassland in Namibia, prompting authorities to contact NASA and European Space Agency.

A Psysorg.com report said that according to researchers, several such balls have been found in Southern Africa, Australia and Latin America in the past 20 years.

Police forensics director Paul Ludik reported that the hollow sphere was found 18 meters from its landing spot near a village in the north of Namibia some 750 kilometers from the capital Windhoek.

A large metallic ball was made of a "metal alloy known to man" and weighed six kilogrammes (13 pounds), Ludik said.
While the sphere was discovered mid-November, authorities first did tests before announcing the find.

Police deputy inspector general Vilho Hifindaka concluded the sphere did not pose any danger.

"It is not an explosive device, but rather hollow, but we had to investigate all this first," Hifindaka said.
