Companies Sony and Samsung will be battling each other with their enormous Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 Android phablets. The phone-tablet design is currently becoming a trend and the two devices are expected to compete in the market.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra will have its worldwide launch on Q3 of 2013 while the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 will be initially released in Europe and Russia. There is no confirmation yet as to when the devices precisely arrive in Australia.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra has a fine rectangle shape design with flat sides and metallic curved edges available in three colour choices of black, white and purple. The striking design feature of this phablet is ability to resist water and dust with its IP55 and IP58 standards.

On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 maintains the smooth plastic finish and metallic sides comparable to the existing Samsung Galaxy range. The phablet is available in two colour choices with the removable rear cover to expose the battery, microSD card and microSIM slot.

Both devices boast with remarkable internal specifications. Sony Xperia Z Ultra is powered with the 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB of RAM, the non-removable Li-ion 3050mAh battery, 16GB internal storage capacity that can be expanded up to 64GB and function on the 2G, 3G or 4G networks with connectivity to Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS.

For the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, the phablet has a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor with Adreno 305 GPU, 1.5GB of RAM, available internal storage capacities of 8GB or 16GB that can be expanded as well up to 64GB through the microSD card slot, a removable 3200mAh battery and connectivity support for 2G, 3G or 4G networks, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC.

The screen display and size highlights the Sony and Samsung devices. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra sports the 6.44-inch Triluminous shatter-proof and scratch-resistant display that protects the phablet against damages with a Full HD resolution and pixel density of 344ppi.

With the Galaxy Mega, it has a 6.3-inch screen size as the device name suggests with LCD display and 720p resolution. The phablet has a pixel density of 233ppi which is lower compared to the Sony device but the users will still be impressed with its lively display.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra utilizes the Sony Xperia UI with a Battery Stamina mode feature that conserves battery consumption while Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 makes use of the TouchWiz overlay. The Sony UI will allow the owners to use pen or pencil with a tip diameter greater than 1mm as the device's stylus.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 offers the Air View and Group Play features. The Air View feature enables the users to move their finger over the screen to preview selected details on the device like a video thumbnail, a calendar entry or a photo galley while the Group Play feature sends music images and files to several devices found on the same Wi-Fi network.

In capturing images or videos, an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera can be found on the Sony Xperia Z Ultra with the two camera features of HDR and Optical Image Stabilisation for still images and video recording.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 also has an 8MP rear-facing camera with 1.9MP front-facing cameras for video calls. Though the Samsung phablet does not have HDR video and Optical Image Stabilisation for still images or videos, the device offers a couple of camera TouchWize software features such as Drama Shot where it can capture 100 shots in 4 seconds, the Sound & Shot feature that can capture a picture and up to 9 seconds of audio and the Story Album feature where the photos are grouped together similar to a timeline.
