Sony Xperia Z features amazing hardware and impressive protection against water even submerged for 30 minutes. The device is also dust-proof and scratch resistant. But Xperia Z is not capable of withstanding heavy battery usage and shortage of memory. Luckily, here are some Do-It-Yourself fixes to solve these issues and avoid the services of budget-slashing technicians.

RAM and Internal Memory
Xperia Z is not an exception to memory shortage, and the recommended solution is to organise your applications. Check the RAM by going to "Settings > Applications > Running and see what applications are consuming the memory. Check the internal storage as well, go to "Settings > Storage."

  • Keep at least 10 per cent of the internal storage free.
  • Uninstall unnecessary and idle applications to free the RAM.
  • Use the Back key when leaving applications to close them.
  • Restart the device regularly to free its memory. Do not use Quick Boot for this intent.

Disable Applications
You can disable applications either preinstalled or from third parties to prevent them consuming RAM and battery. To do so, go to "Settings > Applications > All > Select the app > Disable." Disabled applications will not be visible in the app drawer and only displayed at the bottom of All Applications list, enable them whenever you desire.

Live Wallpaper
Too many syncing apps and a live wallpaper can burden the virtual memory or RAM. If any Live Wallpapers are active and feels laggy or slow, do not use them and simply try a still wallpaper instead.

Widgets
These set of icon on the home screen are very attractive and beautiful, but looks can be deceiving. Reduce the amount of widgets you use to speed the device UI and minimise RAM consumption.

Task Killers
It is not recommended even by Sony to use any task killers if you do not know how to configure them. Normally, task killers close all applications running in the background and can later cause problems with applications, widgets, and can also drain more battery. Android OS makes up memory by automatically closing an app for the newly opened one.

Battery Saving
Sony Xperia Z has a built-in battery saving features and you can them at any time you want to extend the phone's battery life. Xperia Z has three battery saving modes:

  • STAMINA mode: It disables Wi-Fi and mobile data connection whenever the screen is off and enables it again once you turn on the device. Stamina mode does not affect the music player, FM radio, downloads or uploads. You can also configure which applications will remain active under Stamina Mode.
  • Low battery mode: It saves more energy when the battery level reached 30 per cent and you can change which functions are disabled on this mode such as vibration on touch, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, Auto-sync and Mobile Data.
  • Location-based Wi-Fi: It automatically turns Wi-Fi on only when you are near a saved Wi-Fi network to save the phone battery. This mode also includes Wi-Fi Set up connection.
