Sony is set to release a number of smartphones in the coming months, including the soon-to-be available Sony Xperia XA1 and the Sony Xperia XZs. Meanwhile, the two handsets’ big brothers – the Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium – are scheduled for a much later release. Here are the specs and features of the Sony’s upcoming mobile phones.

The midrange Sony Xperia XA1 features a borderless design and a 5.0-inch edge-to-edge IPS LCD display with a 720 x 1,280 screen resolution and 294 PPI pixel density. It’s powered by a Mediatek MT6757 Helio P20 octa-core processor (4 x 2.3 GHz Cortex-A53 and 4 x 1.6 GHz Cortex-A53), a Mali-T880MP2 GPU, 32 GB internal storage and 3 GB of RAM.

The Xperia XA1 furnishes a 23 MP primary camera with a large 1/2.3” Exmor RS sensor, f/2.0 lens, Hybrid Autofocus and LED flash. Its selfie camera is an 8 MP shooter with an f/2.0 aperture and 1/4” sensor. The 2,900 mAh non-removable lithium-ion battery has quick charge support. Qnovo Adaptive Charging monitors the battery’s health and regulates charging current to avoid tear and maximise lifespan.

Meanwhile, the Sony Xperia XZs equips a 5.2-inch Triluminos display with a 1,080 x 1,920 resolution and 424 PPI pixel density. Inside, it packs a Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset (2 x 2.15 GHz Kryo and 2 x 1.6 GHz Kryo), an Adreno 530 GPU, 32 GB internal memory and 4 GB of RAM.

The Xperia XZs sports a 19 MP main camera with 1/2.3” Exmor RS sensor and electronic image stabilisation (EIS). The front-facing camera is a 13 MP snapper that is capable of 1080p video recording. The Sony Xperia XZs battery is virtually the same as that of the XA1 in terms of power and features.

The new Xperia handsets run on Android 7.0 Nougat. A dedicated microSD slot that’s expandable up to 256 GB is likewise available on both smartphones. Both devices also have loudspeakers and the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The Sony Xperia XA1 shall be available starting April 26. Prices start at US$300 (AU$390). The XA1 comes in four colours: white, black, pink and gold.

The Sony Xperia XZs will be available early on April 5. The phone comes with a US$700 (AU$912) price tag and in three colours: ice blue, warm silver and black.
