With the Xperia Z4 release data unconfirmed, Sony is apparently working on the Xperia Z4 Ultra smartphone. A new report from DigiTimes says the phablet-sized device is currently in development phase.

The Japanese tech giant is reportedly manufacturing the Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra designed in Taiwan. If the reports are true, this handset will be the successor to the well-received Xperia Z Ultra, released in 2013. As far as the key Xperia Z4 Ultra specifications go, the display size of the handset will reportedly be around 6.0-inch. Therefore, the form factor of the Xperia Z4 Ultra will not be any different from the 6.44-inch display clad predecessor Xperia Z Ultra, notes GSM Arena.

When it comes to other key Xperia Z4 Ultra specifications, the handset is believed to be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor. In comparison, the 2013 Xperia Z Ultra comes powered by a Snapdragon 800 SoC. In general, the predecessor Ultra comes with relatively low-end specs when compared to the flagship from 2014 Xperia Z3. However, the upcoming Xperia Z4 Ultra is expected to be similar to the upcoming flagship Xperia Z4, especially when it comes to under the hood configurations. But then, the Z4 Ultra will apparently be bigger than the flagship device.

On the other hand, the same report also points out that, according to industry sources, Sony is gearing up to reduce the number of entry-level handsets in its line-up. Alternatively, the tech giant will be concentrating on the mid to high-end series of devices. Therefore, this move explains the need for the high-end Xperia Z4 Ultra. And Sony’s sales predictions figure for 2015 is apparently set for 38 million units. This number is about a million less than 2014 predictions at 39.2 million units, notes Trusted Reviews.

Speaking of mid range devices, according to DigitTimes, “Despite the absence of new orders from Sony Mobile since the fourth quarter of 2014, Taiwan's ODMs have begun shipping some new models to the Japan-based vendor recently, including the Xperia E4 from Arima Communications, Xperia E4g from Compal Electronics and Xperia M4 Aqua from Foxconn/FIH Mobile.” Nonetheless, the tech giant has not confirmed the Sony Xperia Z4 Ultra specifications and features thus far.
