Sony seems to have no current plans to produce a successor to the PlayStation Vita. The company did not specify the reason, but it pointed out that the current state of handheld gaming is unhealthy.

The worldwide studios chief for Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida announced the news during an EGX 2015 developer’s session, as reported by Eurogamer. Yoshida attributed the current state of the handheld industry to the rise of mobile gaming devices.

"People have mobile phones and it's so easy to play games on smartphones," Yoshida said. "And many games on smartphones are free, or free to start.”

Sony is also reportedly not thinking of coming out with a followup to the PlayStation Vita because of the poor sales of the current handheld. Yoshida believes that one of the reasons why handheld consoles are being beaten by smartphones today is because the latter are more convenient and have more features.

Sony’s PlayStation Vita is also criticised for having many issues and a small library of AAA titles. The company is said to be keen on fixing on the errors, though some of them may reportedly take time.

Though Sony is currently one of the top companies in the home console wars, leading sales with its PlayStation 4, it is reportedly not doing well in the handheld department because of the poor performance of the PlayStation Vita in the market. Meanwhile, Express UK reports that the PlayStation 4 will one day beat Xbox One sales by 20 million.

Several analysts have also predicted that the PlayStation 4 will be able to dominate other consoles. The assumptions were based on an August 2015 report, which shows increased sales each month for the PlayStation 4.
