Despite having the word sniper in the title, the "Sniper: Ghost Warrior" series has never really hit the right mark with audiences. While not borderline unplayable the series does have a reputation for being mostly mediocre compared to its competition like "Call of Duty," "Battlefield" and "Sniper Elite" having an overall score of 50 from Metacritic for "Ghost Warrior 2." So in a strange move, CI games who also created "Lords of the Fallen" have announced the next iteration of their less than stellar game franchise: "Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3." The sequel is set to hit the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC sometime in 2016.

What's even stranger than the announcement is that CI Games stated that this would be their first AAA effort for the franchise, which is the equivalent of admitting that they knew their games were mediocre before. Still with the promise of this game officially being taken seriously, if looks like the fans will get a completely new experience. They even hired Steve Hart, the former senior producer of the well-received "Sniper Elite 3" according to Eurogamer.

CI Games CEO Marek Syminski also promised a much better experience for this outing saying: "We're investing a significant amount of effort into the third installment," Tyminski said. "We're fully committed to creating a AAA franchise that gamers can rely on for the ultimate first-person sniper experience."

The story will be set in modern day Eastern Europe with the player caught between three warring factions. According to PC Gamer "Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3" will be give players more options to explore when making assassinations as the game will be an open world sand box that promises to be non-linear so it looks like players won't be limited to just a regular sniper rifle.

No other details have been announced nor have there been any trailers or videos released, but with the high standards that CI Games has promised and the recent addition of Steve Hart possibly turning their luck it's clear that CI Games wants "Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3" to hit the right target audience. The game has always been a commercial success, but will it finally be a critical one?
