The pilot episode of CW’s new comedy series “Significant Mother” established the Lydia-Jimmy relationship. “Significant Mother” episode 2 titled “Mixed Doubles” focuses on the new couple’s desire to prove to Nate Marlowe, played by Josh Zuckerman, that they are serious about their relationship.

Nate is still getting used to the fact that his mother Lydia, played by Krista Allen, is now sleeping with his best friend Jimmy Barnes, played by Nathaniel Buzolic. Nate thinks that Lydia and Jimmy are not serious with their relationship because they never went out on a date in public.

Lydia and Jimmy insist that their relationship has a future and they are serious so both agreed to go out on a date to prove Nate is wrong. However, Jimmy starts to panic about his first date with Lydia so he asks Nate for tips on where to take his mother on their first date in order to impress her.

Nate refuses to help so Jimmy approaches organic farmer Atticus Adams, played by Jay Ali. Jimmy used the money he earned from working at Atticus’ farm to take Lydia to a fancy place on their first date.

Earlier at the Lincoln restaurant, Jimmy catches Nate looking at the profile of his employee and Atticus’ girlfriend, Sam Dillinger, played by Emma Fitzpatrick. Jimmy thinks Nate has not been in a relationship for over a year now because he likes Sam but Nate insists he does not like her.

Nate finds a girl to go out on a date with but ends up with a notorious cougar named Pepper Spinner, played by Denise Richards. While Lydia prepares for her date with Jimmy, Harrison Marlowe, played by Jonathan Silverman, also thinks Lydia is not serious with her relationship with Jimmy and that she is only getting back at him for sleeping with other women.

At the Ponzi winery, Jimmy and Lydia cross paths with Nate and Pepper. Nate is shocked to find out that Pepper knows his mom.

Pepper suggests they share a table and enjoy a “mixed doubles” but the double date immediately turned awkward. Then, Pepper and Lydia get into a heated argument after Pepper mocked Lydia’s relationship with Jimmy and suggested that Lydia’s son is with her because he secretly wants to sleep with his own mother.

Lydia maintains her relationship with Jimmy is serious. Nate bails on his date with Pepper because he does not want to get intimate with someone he does not care about.

Nate heads back to the restaurant to finally let Sam and Atticus, who looked after the place while he was gone, go on their equinox date. Then, Nate finds his dad mourning the death of his marriage to Lydia.

Harrison, who is stuffing himself with Chinese takeout, is devastated that Lydia has finally moved on and her relationship with Jimmy is serious. When Harrison suggested that Nate should just tell Sam that he likes her, Nate still insists that he does not like Sam.

“And I’m not still in love with your mom. Sometimes, the worst lies we tell are the ones we tell ourselves,” Harrison tells his son. Nate finally acknowledges his feelings for Sam by taking the egg roll that his father offered him earlier.

“Significant Mother” returns with episode 3 titled “Who’s Your Daddy?” on Monday night, Aug. 17. The brand new episode will air at 9:30/8:30c on the CW Network.
