Released back in 2014, “Shovel Knight” became an instant cult classic due to its unique but classic gameplay and its 8-bit retro style. What was once a Kickstarter project is now one of the popular games available on nearly every console, including newer ones like the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. It seems “Shovel Knight” will continue to captivate fans with a new downloadable content, or DLC, and rumour that he might be joining the cast of a popular fighting series.

Although the release date is yet to be confirmed, Kotaku Australia reports that “Shovel Knight” will be getting an expansion pretty soon, and it will reportedly come as a free addition to the original game. The expansion is titled “Plague of Shadows” and it will add a whole new story to the game. Players will take on the role of a new protagonist, Plague Knight, as he rummages through dungeons. Along with the slew of new content, “Plague of Shadows” will also introduce a crafting system, new bosses and enemies and new objectives.

There are also rumours about the knight’s inclusion in the “Super Smash Bros.” roster. Such reports circulated online since Nintendo opened votes for the fighter ballot. Now a new report by Nintendolife seems to solidify the spot of “Shovel Knight” into the “Super Smash Bros.” roster.

The developer, Yacht Club, teased a “megaton” reveal on the site this week along with the news of “Plague Knight.” The news teases a DLC that hints at an exclusive content coming to Nintendo systems. Since “Super Smash Bros.” is a 3DS and Wii U exclusive, this reportedly could mean that “Shovel Knight” will join the already vast roster. However, the news is yet to be confirmed.

“Shovel Knight” is currently available on all consoles for $15 (AU $21). Buying the game will give players access to the upcoming DLC.
