Blake Lively returns to the big screen with a splash, and her latest foray, titled “The Shallow,” pits her against the ocean’s monstrous beast.

Describing itself as the “Jaws” for the new generation, the movie is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. In the new trailer released by Sony Pictures, the 28-year-old actress plays Nancy, a surfer who thought she has found paradise in a secluded beach. However, instead of a catching some giant waves, she finds herself caught between a rock and a hard place. Amid the ideal sun, sea and sand setting lies great trouble, and she finds soon enough that it is actually a feeding ground of a great white shark.

After nearly escaping the shark’s gnawing teeth, she manages to hurl herself onto a giant rock in the middle of the ocean. Her companions were not as lucky, however, as the vicious animal wastes no time feeding on them. The rock becomes her safe haven, as the shark circles around her, waiting. She knows that sooner or later, she has to get off the rock and swim towards the shore for safety. While it’s merely 200 yards, she recognises that the minute she dips her foot on the water, she’ll instantly become shark bait.

Nancy knows that she could only rely on herself and her survival skills to escape. Showing great courage, ingenuity and resourcefulness, she bravely plunges down to the shark’s territory and manages to stab it, screaming, “I’m not dying here!”

Lively earlier gave a sneak peek of the thriller’s behind the scenes. The “Gossip Girl” alum posted a photo of her bikini-clad self while balancing on the rock. Whilst her arm was covered with blood, Ryan Reynold’s wife assured her fans that she’s not bitten by a shark. She wrote, “No, I wasn’t actually attacked by a shark. That definitely would've affected my 2015 …and my balance #TheShallows #Movie #BehindTheScenes P.S. How rad did I feel for not falling off the rock for this pic.”

Lively is joined by other cast members Óscar Jaenada , Brett Cullen and Sedona Legge. “The Shallows ” hits US cinemas on June 29 and the Australian theatres on August 18.
