The iconic “Batman” villain, the Joker, was the primary focus of the latest “Suicide Squad” trailer, which was shown on July 20 at the San Diego Comic Con in California, US. Jared Leto, front man of rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars, can be seen donning green hair and the trademark Joker makeup.

The "Clown Prince of Crime" is seen breaking out of an asylum and gathering the members of the squad. The Joker drives through the city and wreaks havoc wherever he goes. At the end of the trailer, he is seen sprawled on the floor while surrounded by knives.

Actors who previously played as Joker are Cesar Romero in 1966, Jack Nicholson in 1989, and Heath Ledger in 2008. Compared to the previous versions, Jared’s Joker looked more modern. According to Entertainment Weekly, the 44-year-old rock star’s reincarnation of the “Clown Prince of Crime” was “decked out with rings, fancy cars, tattoos, and shiny, open blazers” and looked “much more gangster.”

“You’re kind of walking upon hallowed ground, and it deserves the very best that you can do,” Jared told EW about his role. “It takes over your life and that’s what I needed to do for myself.”

The Oscar-winning actor took his role to heart. As a method actor, Jared interviewed psychiatrists and their most deranged patients to get a deeper understanding of how a sociopath thinks. The cast and the staff of “Suicide Squad” said that he would prank and send strange gifts to his co-stars. Jared once sent a live rat named Rat-Rat to Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie, and a dead hog for everyone in the squad. He was also reported to have sent them anal beads. The crew did not seem to mind his unconventional way of getting into character, although some fans thought he might have taken his role a bit too far.

“As an actor, he’s flinging himself into the abyss on that one,” described “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer. “And he was scary on set. He was intimidating.”

When they finished filming, Jared gave his squad a “parting gift” which was a boxful of explicit magazines, a used condom, a dildo, and a switchblade. Co-star Karen Fukuhara said the gesture was hilarious and that she “wanted to keep all of them.”

“Suicide Squad” is confirmed to be released globally on August 5.
