Sarah Burton, the fashion director for Alexander McQueen was hailed by Harper's Bazaar as the "Designer of the Year," all thanks to her commissioned wedding dress creation for the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton.

The prestigious award was given to the designer after gaining much recognition for the glorious laced gown Middleton wore on the day of her wedding. After much speculation on who will design the royal wedding dress, the revelation came when Middtleton walked down the aisle of Westminster Abbey and revealed the Sarah Burton creation.

Burton, who became the design director of Alexander McQueen shortly after the designer's death, is hailed for the "feminine" transition she made for the brand. Before, Alexander McQueen designs are cutting edge and bordering on the "off-beat" side, until Burton introduced gowns, lady-like silhouettes and florals to the brand's following collections.

Burton's designs are also some of the Duchess' favorites, with her creations seen in many royal appearances - including the BAFTA event held in Hollywood months back.

The prestigious acclaim was given to the designer because of the painstaking work she made for the dress and the impact it has made around the world. Just hours after the royal wedding, replicas are already being made and sold for brides who want to mimic the Princess.

"I remember standing in Westminster Abbey thinking, 'This is unreal'. It was like a fairy tale. And all I could think was, 'I hope I don't trip over'. I didn't realise the enormity of it until much nearer the wedding day. It was a magical experience," gushed Burton in a report.
