There are many relatively cheaper Android tablets for those shopping away from the pricey Apple iPads. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, Nexus 7 2nd generation, and HP Slate are only three of the most popular 7-inch tablet alternatives today. If you're tab shopping for something both kids and adults can enjoy, know you have a lot of choices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 is one of the latest devices from the trusted Korean tech giant. Online shoppers will find the 7-inch Tab 3 (8GB, Wi-Fi) for $229 on kogan.com.au. It sports a screen display featuring 1024×600 p resolution (169ppi). This is not bad at all if you have not been visually spoiled by Apple's Retina display technology.

Samsung's TouchWiz UI on the Galaxy Tab 3 is intuitive - children and adults can work their way through the tab smoothly. This tab is fuelled only by a dual-core CPU with 1GB of RAM - not the most competitive combo today, but if you're not heavy on media-games consumption, you'll be fine. In contrast, the 7.9-inch Apple iPad mini (16GB, dual core, 512MB RAM, no external storage) costs $359 in the same Australian online store.

The just-released Nexus 7 2nd generation (16GB, Wi-Fi) is also on Kogan for $279. Taking specs and features in consideration, this tab is better than the Galaxy Tab 3 in paper. For Android fans, owning a Google device means enjoying the pure Android experience and the latest OS updates.

The Nexus 7 2 also has better screen display at 1920 x 1200p resolution (323ppi). The demanding display gets a more robust system too. This tab is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro with 2 GB of RAM. However, one potential dealbreaker with the Google Nexus device is its lack of external storage provision. If you frequently download and store media files, the Galaxy Tab 3's 32 GB space provision via microSD would be useful.

If neither the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 nor the Google Nexus 7 2nd gen is appealing to you, check out the HP 7" Slate. For only $189 in Kogan, the Slate (8GB, Wi-Fi) might be the device that matches your budget. It is heavier by over 60g compared to the Tab 3 and Nexus 7. But it also sports a 1024 x 600p screen display resolution, comes with dual-core processor and 1 GB RAM. Both the Tab 3 and the Slate sport a 3MP shooter, whereas the N7 features a 5MP camera.

Which cheap Android tablet fits your requirements - Galaxy Tab 3, Nexus 7, or Slate? Tablet shopping can be a challenge. But knowing your priorities and setting a definite budget makes it a little easier.
