Longtime rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will collide in the final of the Miami Open Sunday evening, their third meeting in 2017. Federer, the fourth seed, got the better of the fifth-seeded Spaniard at the 2017 Australian Open final and later the Round of 16 tie at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Federer, who won the Key Biscayne event in 2005 and 2006, could potentially take his career tally of ATP titles to 92 with a rare streak of four consecutive victories over Nadal. After hard-fought wins in the 2015 Basel final and 2017 Australian Open final, the Swiss master cruised past Nadal 6-2, 6-3 in just 68 minutes to reach the quarterfinals at Indian Wells on March 16.

After the recent wins, Federer detailed the reasons for his improved showing against Nadal in recent years. Federer has consciously relied on his improved backhand, while standing inside the baseline and attacking the Spaniard in early stages of a game. Incidentally, the very same strategy, which involves enticing Nadal with a series of low backhands, had backfired in the past. "By coming over my backhand on the return, from the get-go of the point, I can dominate points right away. It's important to keep your opponent off-guard and know that he has to be careful," the 35-year-old Federer said after his Indian Wells victory.

Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal: Fourth contest at Miami Open

Federer hasn't had an easy path to the Miami Open final. After fighting off two match points to get past tenth seeded Czech Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinal, Federer was pushed to a five-setter by Nick Kyrgios on Friday. Federer survived the young Australian with a 7-6 (11/9), 6-7 (11/9), 7-6 (7/5) victory in front of a rampant crowd at Key Biscayne, Florida.

Nadal and Federer have met on three previous occasions at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in South Florida. In 2004, Nadal came through in a 6-3, 6-3 victory before Federer won the 2005 final. In 2011, Nadal prevailed 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-finals. Ahead of Sunday's final, Federer reminisced over his rivalry with Nadal which has stood the test of time. “Should be really exciting because we had this epic match in 2005, the final was unbelievable, it was a turning point in my career, to be quite honest.

"For me, to be able to focus for, I don't know how long we played, maybe four hours, smashing forehand after forehand down the line. I remember I felt like I had to learn how to fight in matches, and there I showed it to myself and my team that I could do it. It was against somebody who ended up being my biggest rival. It's definitely going to be very special playing Rafa here again. Of course I'm thrilled for him as well that he came back as well as he did after the comeback, the struggles that he had last year," the 18-time Grand Slam champion was quoted as saying by ATPworldtour.com.
