Rafael Nadal will battle Dominic Thiem of Austria in the final of the 2017 Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Sunday. The Spaniard is eyeing his fifth Madrid Masters title and a record-tying 30th ATP Masters 1000 championship a day after defeating arch rival Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.

Nadal has been nearly invincible this clay-court season. He's currently on a 14-game winning streak courtesy 28 out of 30 sets, including back-to-back titles at Monte-Carlo and Barcelona. The Spaniard will look to win the Madrid Masters and the upcoming Italian Open en route to a potential 10th French Open title next month.

Thiem, 23, is one of the fastest rising stars on the ATP circuit. Though he was overwhelmed by Nadal (6-4, 6-1) in last month’s Barcelona Open final, Thiem defeated the the Spaniard during the 2016 Buenos Aires semi-finals after rallying back from match point down. According to ATP's official website, a victory on Sunday would make Thiem "the first ATP Masters 1000, ATP Finals or Grand Slam champion born after 1988."

After defeating Argentine Pablo Cuevas in Saturday's semi-final, Thiem said he wasn't intimidated by Nadal and expects a competitive final on Sunday. “I think he (Rafael Nadal) played a very good match in Barcelona. I played well also. If I'm at my best and he's at his best on clay, he's probably the better player. If you see his records on this surface, it's just amazing. But tomorrow is a new day. I will try to improve the things I didn't do that good in Barcelona and then we will see what happens," said the Austrian, via Live Tennis.

Meanwhile, Nadal got a monkey off his back Saturday by snapping a seven-game losing streal to Novak Djokovic. Though Nadal downplayed the importance of breaking the streak, analysts at the arena felt the Spaniard was playing his best tennis since 2014 and would walk into the 2017 French Open as the overwhelming favourite. "Finally I managed to win it (beat Djokovic). It's a very important victory. It gives me the possibility to play another final and to continue in a positive line. I am happy the way I played today, being able to make it to the final once again. I'll try to be 100 per cent and ready for tomorrow's match."

The Madrid Open will be quickly followed by the Italian Open, another ATP Masters 1000 event in the lead-up to Roland Garross. Rome will be the final stop for Rafael Nadal & Co. before the the 2017 French Open (May 22 - June 11). For Nadal, a victory at the Italian Open could secure a Top-2 seed in Roland Garross.
