Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal was recently named as the "Favourite Son of Mallorca" on Dec. 1. The ceremony was also attended by Nadal's girlfriend, Xisca Perello, as well as his parents, grandparents, and other family relatives.

Nadal is reportedly the 11th person to receive the award, Diario De Mallorca reports. He is the only living recipient of the said award because the previous ten has been awarded posthumously. The ceremony took place at the Consell de Mallorca on Dec. 1, attended by some of the distinguished personalities of the Mallorca society.

"I appreciate being a Mallorcan," Nadal said in his speech. "The first thing that I do when I'm playing in other countries, whether I win or lose in the tournament, is to seek for the fastest way to go back to Mallorca."

Nadal also praised Mallorca Island Council President Maria Salom in his speech. He said that Salom is the best ambassador that the island of Mallorca has ever had.

Nadal's girlfriend Xisca wanted to make sure that she will be there to show her support when the current World No. 3 receives his award. Xisca attended the ceremony, wearing a coat over her short black dress. She wore a light makeup and let her curly tresses flowing freely. According to an article by Europa Press, Xisca works in London, which makes it hard for the couple to find time to be with each other.

Nadal's fellow compatriot and National Basketball Association, or NBA star Pau Gasol congratulated the tennis player for his recent accolade. Gasol was born in Barcelona, Spain. He currently plays for the Chicago Bulls of the NBA.

Congrats @RafaelNadal on being chosen Favorite Son of Mallorca. A great example of effort & a reference point for us all! #VAMOSRAFA

Meanwhile, Nadal has gone back to training as seen on his latest post on Facebook. Nadal admitted via Sky Sports that it was always tough to train after a long layoff from the sport. Nonetheless, he remains optimistic that he will become healthy again so he can play well in the Abu Dhabi and Doha tournaments. He said that he will be taking advantage of those tournaments to condition his body. Nadal is hopeful he will have enough time to practice so he will be ready when he competes in Australia for the first Grand Slam of the 2015 season.
