Decapitations are not exclusive to Islamic State militants, even New Yorkers who are deranged also engage in beheading.

However, in the case of beheading victim Patricia Ward, a 66-year-old former State University of New York professor, the axe man was not Jihadist John but her son Derek who had mental health problems.

After decapitating his mum, Derek hang her head like a Halloween décor on one side of Secatogue Avenue near Eastern Parkway and her body on another side of the same street. Steve, reportedly carrying a Smith & Wesson gun and prescription drugs, committed suicide on Tuesday night by throwing himself in front of a Long Island Rail Road train, reports the New York Post.

Dale Silverman, a 59-year old resident, recalled that while driving along Secatogue Avenue, "I saw a head ... It had long, black straight hair. I did a double-take thinking it was a stupid little shrunken heads you would hang as a Halloween thing."

The corpse was in the open for over 20 minutes. When the police arrived, they covered it with a sheet, but first made sure it wasn't a Halloween props. In another part of the street where the professor's head was found, a man tapped the decapitated body part to check if it was fake.

Dean Corbo, the man who checked the decapitated head, pointed out that some houses have elaborate Halloween displays, so it wouldn't be improbable that a fake head would not be a farfetched idea on days leading to Halloween.

Reports said that Derek used a knife to decapitate his mother and then dragged her body outside and kicked her head across the street. Reports said that Ward had broken ribs and several stab wounds.

Detective Lt John Azzata of Nassau homicide said that Steve's psychiatric problem has been ongoing for a decade, plus he was a steroid addict and had a criminal records such as gun and drug charges.

Ward taught language arts at the SUNY Farmingdale for 28 years. Fellow faculty members were shocked at her gory end in the hands of her son on the week of Halloween.
