Brothers Jim and William Reid are back on the road with their 1980s renowned post-punk Scottish act The Jesus and Mary Chain. They are bringing back their entire 1985 debut album “Psychocandy” to life in Auckland’s Powerstation in March 2016. The band was one of the most influential alternative British rock bands during the 80s.

According to Stuff.co.nz, The Jesus and Mary Chain was notorious for their distortion-drenched, wall-of-noise approach. The band’s approach to pop tunes in the most chaotic of manners inspired the Shoegaze generation and Britpop musicians.

Their violence-filled live shows and short sets were a thing to behold. However, the band came close enough to getting banned by local councils once but they survived and are back with a bang for the new generation of music lovers and old fans. It will be interesting to see whether they will be able to perform with the gusto.

Riding on the popularity of their debut single “Upside Down,” and other songs like “Never Understand” and “You Trip Me Up," the band’s “Psychocandy” release in 1985 was greeted with tremendous hype. The album is considered by many as a classic for the unusual mix of deep reverb, blurry toned guitars and melodies of 1960s pop, according to New Zealand Herald.

Unfortunately in 1999 the band split after six albums only to be reunited again in 2007 for the Coachella festival in California. Popular actress Scarlett Johansson performed as guest vocalist as the band’s song “Just Like Honey” was featured in Johansson’s movie “Lost in Translation.”

It was rumoured that The Jesus and Mary Chain was working on another album after their reunion but nothing has come out ever except past compilations and sporadic song for soundtracks. No one knows whether this 2016 Auckland show will open roads for another album.

Powerstation will also see performances by British metal band Asking Alexandria, who will be supported by American metalcore band Blessthefall and Australia’s Buried in Verona.
